Yet Another 12 Blogs Of Christmas #2: Do not be afraid

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people…”
Luke 2:8-10 (NIV)

The economy is collapsing.

Our institutions are crumbling.

Authority is breaking down.

“Do not be afraid…”

Unemployment is soaring.

There are wars, and there are rumours of wars.

The climate is changing.

“Do not be afraid…”

We don’t know what comes next.

We struggle to process what’s gone before.

Even the present is like shifting sand.

“Do not be afraid…”

That letter might be a final demand.

That argument might be the last straw.

That lump could be cancer.

“Do not be afraid…”

It’s easy to write this on my fancy phone, tucked up in bed in a warm house. I know there are a thousand and one things out there to be terrified of, some of them waiting outside our door driven my malice, some of them acting out of stupidity or misguided beliefs, some of them about to run us over without even noticing us. I know all that.

But when the angel says to the shepherds. “Do not be afraid”, it’s a refrain that comes throughout the Bible; heck, throughout history – yes, there’s plenty to be scared of, but we have a choice. We can hide away, never do anything or experience anything or fight anything because we’re scared. Or we can overcome that fear, take hold of our hopes and dreams and make them a reality.

And really that’s one of the core messages of Christmas – Hope has entered the world. In the midst of a hopeless economic and political situation, the shepherds were offered a glimpse of something greater, something bigger and better than their fears.

We don’t have to be slaves to the things we’re afraid of.

We don’t have to tolerate politicians and tabloid journalists and uninformed blokes down the pub telling us to be scared all the time.

We don’t have to live in fear.

“Do not be afraid…”

For there is still such a thing as hope.
