Philippines Crucifixion Re-enactment

There’ll be a dedicated Good Friday post along later, but for now I just wanted to link to the now traditional re-enactments of the crucifixion taking place in the Philippines (one of the participants is on his 26th crucifixion). This is a difficult one for me to grasp – on the one hand, I can’t help but admire the devotion of the men putting themselves through this, even if I disagree with its expression. On the other hand, it seems to be missing one of the key points of the Easter story – don’t crucify yourself over your wrongdoings, Christ took that bullet on your behalf. Honour, worship and respect that, sure, but there’s no need to nail yourself to a cross. The gift of grace is sufficient.

Still fascinating to see how people express their faith though.
