Aflockalypse Now

What exactly is going on?

I mean, over the last couple of weeks, there seems to have been a spate of mass animal deaths, mainly birds and fish, to the extent that people have started to track them on Google Maps. I mean, sure, this is the age of the 24-hour rolling news cycle and easy access to a global information network so it’s possible that we’re just more aware of things that are just a normal natural phenomenon (albeit a weird one), but don’t you think it’s all a bit…creepy? Like the forerunner to the Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse, or alien experimentation acting as the precursor to an invasion?

Yes, I know, it’s all very Hollywood, but at least I’m not suggesting that it’s a harbinger of the Second Coming, as one American preacher is suggesting (it’s all because the US military dropped its controversial ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy with regard to homosexuality in the military, apparently. Nothing to do with violent crimes or wars or bigotry, obviously)…

Admit it, honey: Openly gay soldiers = thousand of dead blackbirds. Duh! I mean by now you should certainly be aware that homosexuality leads to massive internal trauma for avians and fish.
Actually, I’ve been following the stories of these deaths for a bit now and I cannot possibly see it as normal. That said, I would blame the government or other corporate entities (weapons testing, experimentation, etc.) before I’d blame the gays.
The key to that map is a little creepy, too:

Green = Less or no death
Yellow = Large Quantity of Death
Red = Alarming Quantity of Death

Well, yeah, I think it goes without saying that Preacher Lady is talking nonsense. I can see why the story has broght out the crazy theories though, it all feels a bit sci-fi, even apocalyptic. There’ll probably be a dull, mundane rational explanation for it all, but in the meantime, well… It’s all pretty squinky…
