Anti-Slavery Day

Today is the first British Anti-Slavery Day, an event designed to draw attention to the 12.3 million people working worldwide in conditions that can be described as slavery; from the UK’s point of view, there’s an emphasis on people trafficking, particularly within the sex industry – 38 Degrees are currently running a campaign to get the coalition government to sign up to the EU’s Directive on Human Trafficking. For all that we think of this sort of thing as something that ended in the 1800s, it’s still a blight on our society, just less visible than it might have been a couple of hundred years ago…
