Writer’s Block: Personality goes a long way

Short answer – no. There have been times when people on message boards have thrown their weight around, but that was hardly cyber-bullying. It had the seeds of it, but they were growing in a general, unfocused sort of way, where particular posters, drunk on their own beliefs and convinced that being a big fish in a small pond somehow made them superior, touted their own opinions as if they were gospel truth, and that any disagreement was worthy of drawing down the attention of the Spanish Inquisition. It’s tempting to excuse this, almost – after all, it happens on all message boards eventually – but it’s the same attitude that can lead to vendettas and bullying. And it’s wrong and stupid and some people need to get their heads out of their own asses.

(A message board troll showed up once, being aggressive and everything, so I responded to him by posting a cookie recipe. He didn’t reply.)
