Depends who the other cop is… See, sometimes you’ve got to be Constable Benton Fraser – polite, compassionate, decent and upstanding. The boy scout thing can get things done – most people are willing to help you out if you just treat them with some respect and dignity. As a default setting there’s nothing wrong with being the nice guy, as long as that doesn’t degenerate into being a doormat. Nice guys aren’t necessarily afraid to fight, but they prefer diplomacy and will fight with honour. Nothing wrong with that.
On the other hand, sometimes you need to be DCI Gene Hunt and take out the trash. Because there’s a line that the bad guys should never, ever cross, and when they do… Well, someone’s gotta be the sheriff.
Of course, sometimes you’ve got to put aside all notions of good cops and bad cops. Sometimes a situation calls for a new approach.
Sometimes you’ve gotta be Batman.
