Writer’s Block: Fan love

Just the one character? That’s a bit limiting, considering the amount of geek TV I watch; I can, however, put together a shortlist…

The Doctor
From Doctor Who, not Voyager. It’s the genius eccentric thing, I think, a character who’s always the smartest person in the room but acts like a complete lunatic. A lot of sci-fi heroes are a bit po-faced and serious and worthy – The Doctor failed his exams and flies a time machine that doesn’t work properly, and that’s kinda loveable. Do I collect memorabilia? Only a mountain of books and monthly expenditure reserved for Doctor Who Magazine

Willow, Xander, Andrew and Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
I like any group who can have nerdy/geeky conversations about obscure topics, and who can make comic book references roughly three times every 45 minutes. Geek pride, dude.

Dr. Rodney McKay (Stargate: Atlantis)
Because no-one does stressed out ranting like David Hewlett. As a stressed-out ranter myself, I can relate.

Benton Fraser (Due South)
Because being polite is cool.

Because being able to defuse a bomb with a paperclip is even cooler.

There are probably more (Ironhide from Transformers, the Question from Justice League Unlimited), but I’ve been away for a couple of days, so to be honest my brain’s barely coping with typing…

The Doctor = Awesome. Fact. Like you said, he’s the smartest guy in the room who acts like a mental patient. And when he can solve his problems without violence, he will.
Giles, Willow, Xander and Andrew, you’d have to sell me on. I love Giles, but he’s never seemed “geeky” in the sense that we are – comics, sci fi and whatnot. He’s learned and wise and has more skeletons in his closet than a black lantern. Xander is great. He’s basically Joss Whedon writing Spider-man, and you gotta love that.
