The last surviving witness to 1914’s Christmas truce between British and German troops has passed away. Alfred Anderson, 109, was Scotland’s oldest man, and also served in the Home Guard during WW2.
Being so close to Remembrance Day gives this an extra sense of sadness. I guess it highlights the importance of remembrance – the eyewitnesses to history are passing on, and it falls to us to try and carry their stories down through the years. Maybe knowing history doesn’t stop you from being doomed to repeat it, but it’s worth persevering and remembering.
