Not a good couple of days…

First of all, thoughts and prayers to those affected by hurricane Katrina; the devastation looks truly frightening. Contributions to the Red Cross can be made here.

Also, it’s only right to mention the passing of a British television legend. Michael Sheard has passed away of cancer at the age of 65. Mr. Sheard really impacted the consciousness of a generation with the role of Mr. Bronson in Grange Hill, the most terrifying teacher ever to be loosed onto the education system. Being remembered for one memorable role is a fine thing for any actor, but Sheard also cropped up in other cult legends; he played Lawrence Scarman in one of the all time classic Doctor Who stories (‘Pyramids of Mars’), and was Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back, apparently the first person to die from Darth Vader’s patented Force Choke. AND he was Hitler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

A long time staple of sci-fi conventions, the tribute thread over on Outpost Gallifrey contains plenty of testimonies to his down to earth attitude towards the fans. He really should have gotten a role in the new Doctor Who, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Rest in peace, Mr. Sheard.
