From The Sublime To The Ridiculous

I thought it was worth mentioning that today commemorates William Booth and his wife Catherine, the founders of the Salvation Army. I like the Salvation Army. Not only do they do a lot of good work, but they’re a reassuring presence in Dudley sometimes, from the guy who used to collect outside Wilkinsons, to the annual brass band carol concert in the town centre. That always used to make me feel like Christmas had arrived.

Of course, all this has to be counterpointed by something more…Well, gonzo. Today, the ashes of Hunter S. Thompson are being fired from a cannon. That’s how I’d want to be remembered, if I wasn’t so twitchy at the thought of cremation…
